93rd Troop Command welcomes new command sergeant major

Stahl, who recently relinquished responsibility of 1st Battalion, 200th Infantry, spoke about his new responsibilities and the task ahead of him.

“It’s always been about helping Soldiers,” Stahl said. “I’m here to serve. This allows me to serve in an expanded capacity, but I’m still helping Soldiers at the end of the day, and that’s what it’s all about. It all ends in doing the right thing and that’s how we help each other.”

Stahl began his career in 1994 as a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS) crewmember. He transitioned to the New Mexico National Guard in 1998 and has served in the infantry field since 2005. He has deployed to Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, Iraq, and Egypt.

“I owe my thanks to my family for keeping me alive and healthy and for their continued love,” said Stahl. “For the Soldiers; you’re the reason I exist in this role. I’m looking forward to serving and supporting you.”

With over 35 years of service to the NMNG, Verdugo was scheduled to retire at the end of last year but extended until his replacement as the senior enlisted leader could be found. He has held the position since 2017.

“I’ve had to learn a lot to be able to advise the different kinds of units in the Troop Command,” Verdugo said. “It’s been awesome.”

Verdugo began his service in 1979 as a heavy mobile equipment mechanic before transitioning to the New Mexico Army National Guard. He has deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His awards include two Bronze Star Medals, two Army Commendation Medals, and four Army Achievement Medals.

“The biggest thing for me to say right now is thank you,” said Verdugo. “The guard has done so much for me. I’m really grateful for the time I’ve spent in the Guard. It’s been a true honor.”

Verdugo shared his message of gratitude to the Soldiers of the NMNG.

“To all of the Soldiers out there in the NMNG, I hope I have helped you in some way and encouraged you to do the right thing,” said Verdugo. “Be grateful, because the Guard is there for you and it can do a lot for you.”

Col. Randy Remiker, commander of the 93rd TC, presided over the ceremony, which was limited in attendance due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“Less than 1% of all Soldiers get the opportunity and the privilege to don the rank of command sergeant major,” said Remiker. “When we talk about professionalism and we talk about great people, we have the finest that New Mexico has to offer right here. I’m just honored to be on the same stage with them.”

In closing, Verdugo shared his best advice for Stahl as he takes his new role.

“Listen to the troops,” Verdugo said. “They’ll tell you what their needs are. Just listen to what they really need and make sure they get it.”
