G-9 holds makeup Earth Day

SANTA FE, N.M. – The Environmental Department, Directorate of Installations and Environment (G-9), held a makeup Earth Day this morning at the New Mexico National Guard headquarters complex here.

A dozen Guard employees and service members converged on the field adjacent to the LTG Edward D. Baca Headquarters Building for a beautification project.

The workers pulled weeds, planted five shrubs, spread gravel to reinforce walkways, spread natural grass seed to prevent soil erosion, and posted signs to prevent mowing of the natural area.

The crew planted two three-leaf Sumac, two Golden Privet, and one Mountain Mahogany shrubs.

“We’re getting plants that don’t require a lot of water, do well in winter, and help the local environment,” said Crystal Montoya, an environmental specialist. “These plants provide food to wildlife and pollinators.”

Volunteers were limited in number due to coronavirus concerns. They wore facemasks and practiced social distancing to the extent possible.

“We wanted to have an Earth Day earlier this year, but COVID didn’t let us,” said Aaron Roybal, an environmental specialist. “We’re excited to be able to do this today, so thanks to everyone for showing up.”

Environment Specialist Chris Frietzsche said that another crew emplaced a few natural boulders in the field before the beautification crew began work.

While the Environment Department schedules year-round improvements, the staff traditionally plans events at multiple sites every April to commemorate Earth Day. The department will continue to balance plans against current COVID restrictions.
