After 37 years of honorable service in the New Mexico National Guard, Skibyak’s family and friends were a part of an emotional send-off for one of the NMNG’s most-beloved senior enlisted leaders.
Skibyak retired from the Rio Rancho Police Department in 2009, yet continued to serve the community for another nine years as a member of the National Guard.
As the ceremony progressed, many spoke highly of Skibyak and how he mentored and set them on a path to success.
“Sgt. Maj. Skibyak is the prototypical sergeant major, firm but kind,” said Col. Michael Treadwell, commander of 93rd Troop Command.
“He has definitely left his mark,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas Bump, the director of the joint staff for the NMNG.
Skibyak was looking into the crowd recognizing faces while sharing stories that had happened throughout his career with the many troops that attended his retirement ceremony. The ceremony ended with Skibyak thanking everyone for allowing him to lead them throughout his career.
“You made me look great,” said Skibyak.
