93rd Operations Sgt. Maj. Gerald Burkhart told the audience how Fuentes declined the title of honor graduate when he recently graduated from the active duty Senior Leader Course. Fuentes realized that the honor graduate distinction would better help his active duty classmate who came in second, so he insisted that the title go to him instead. “That’s how much character he has,” said Burkhart. Fuentes was grateful but humbled by the promotion. He repeatedly said, “I just want to thank all of you for being here.” He also gave thanks and flowers to his family members in attendance, starting with his wife. Staff Sgt. James Ray served as the master of ceremonies.
