“This is the 23rd year of the camp,” said Jewel Cabeza de Vaca, Executive Director of Camp Corazones.
According to their website, Camp Corazones provides an annual four day children’s summer camp, age five to twelve years, at no cost to the children and families afflicted with the disease of HIV.
The members of the NMSDF were on-site 24 hours a day throughout the four-day event. The formal mission assigned to the NMSDF was one of support, a broad net that catches a lot of assignments. However, members of the NMSDF are a reflection of the talented and dedicated individuals we see throughout our communities-they get the job done.
When not directly involved in supporting Camp Corazones, the members of the NMSDF took advantage of their time through engagement in team building and unit training. Capt. K.C. Alberg, along with members of his unit, voluntarily traveled roughly 300 miles from Mesilla to Santa Fe in support of Camp Corazones.
“Overall, the period of annual training was invaluable and rewarding,” Alberg said. “There was a demonstrable nexus to our shelter operations as part of the Mission Essential Task List, and a historic first – we were blessed to inherit our company’s inaugural real world medical mission during which our seasoned first responders performed admirably.”
Regardless of the task or conditions, the members of the NMSDF were honored to have the opportunity to play a small part in support of larger commitment to their neighbors. The NMSDF has a long history of supporting Camp Corazones – it is a mission that they are proud to be a part of and one that they look forward to supporting in the years ahead.
