NMNG, DVS host 11th Annual Military Honors Burial Conference

The conference’s purpose was to provide instruction in the proper performance of military burials and funeral honors to the all-volunteer honor guards in attendance. These honor guards—from VSOs such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Marine Corps League, and others—perform such duties throughout the state of New Mexico. “It’s an opportunity to ensure those organizations are honoring veterans in a proper manner,” said Staff Sgt. Judas Perea, NMNG MHP Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge. “This is the perfect time to see how veterans are honored in locations we don’t usually reach.” The participating honor guards first received instruction from NMNG and U.S. Air Force teams. They then displayed their own skills in small and large group competitions. Both the demonstrations and competitions included flag folding and presentation, three rifle volleys, the playing of “Taps,” and overall conduct of a military funeral under varying conditions and situations. “I am truly grateful, and your nation is grateful,” NMNG Maj. Randall Bates told the honor guards in thanking them for ensuring each honorably-discharged veteran receives a proper burial, regardless of the place, time, or conditions. The practical portion of the conference took over several hours in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. Both demonstrators and competitors wore formal uniforms. While judges awarded points, they recognized all honor guards for their hard work. “New Mexicans love their country, they’re dedicated, and they always show up,” said Jared Howard, Director of the Santa Fe and Ft. Bayard National Cemeteries. Each honor guard left the conference better prepared to pay final tribute to New Mexico’s veterans.
